After numerous months of almost total paralysis in the tourism industry in the Balearic Islands, Zafiro Hotels - a Mallorcan hotel chain with 12 four and five-star hotels on the islands of Mallorca and Menorca with an average of more than 1500 employees every season - is extremely concerned about the current situation and has shown its major interest in the reactivation of the tourism industry by joining with the Balearic Hotel Federation to support the message launched by the SOS Tourism campaign, with the “SOS Tourism” message now being displayed on the façade of its headquarters in Port d'Alcudia as well as on that of all of its hotels on the island of Mallorca.

Shared concerns

The uncertainty surrounding the 2021 holiday season and the impossibility of the industry being able to sustain a total shutdown for any longer is generating major concern among all the players in the tourism value chain, the fundamental drivers of the island economy. This discontent and unease is also affecting thousands of people and workers in the industry, many of whom have not been able to work at all for many months.

While the SOS Tourism platform fully respects compliance with the rules that guarantee our safety during the pandemic, it has also reached out to all the different players in the industry to join the movement and demand that the competent authorities take the measures required to revive the industry.

Acceleration of the vaccination process

One of the keys to the reactivation of the tourism industry and the economy in the Balearic Islands is an acceleration in the vaccination process for its residents. "This is the only way we can transmit the image of the Balearic Islands as a safe destination, so it’s already urgent that we vaccinate the largest number of people on the islands as soon as possible. To make this happen, the cooperation and support of the competent authorities is essential. By joining this movement, we hope that this message will be heard by the people responsible for making decisions and that they fully understand the importance of tourism in our economy”, says Antonia Plomer, CEO of Zafiro Hotels.

The hotel chain's Corporate Director of Human Resources, Elena Alzamora, underlines that “our support for this movement is something that Zafiro Hotels as a company sees as in the public interest and also the interest of our employees, most of whom are currently still on furlough”.
