Trick or treat? October 31 is the most terrifying day of the year. Well, actually it’s a tradition that seems to have crossed borders and is now enjoyed in many parts of the world. Its origins are thought to be in Celtic culture and related to the festivals to celebrate the end of the summer and the harvest season and the beginning of a period of shorter days and longer nights. People also used to believe that this was when they were closest to the underworld and when both good and evil spirits crossed the line between both worlds.

Halloween as we know it today began to be celebrated in a major way in the United States thanks to Irish immigrants in the early twentieth century, particularly in Minnesota. Little by little, thanks to exposure on the TV and in the cinema, Halloween has come to be celebrated in most of Europe and many other countries.

Pumpkin decoration

You cannot talk about Halloween without mentioning pumpkins. It is an essential feature of Halloween decorations and also easy and fun to prepare with all the family.

First, we have to choose a pumpkin that is big enough to make something out of it. We then have to draw the design we want with a marker pen. Normally, it’s a scary face, but you can let your imagination fly and draw whatever you want. Then we have to cut the pumpkin with a knife along the lines we have drawn and take out all the flesh and pulp from inside. Finally, we have to place a candle inside the pumpkin to light it up. And that’s it! Decorations ready!

During Halloween day we will be running workshops for kids in our hotels and one of the activities will be pumpkin decoration. 

Horror movie marathon

If you are the kind of person that prefers to stay at home, Halloween is the perfect chance to sit back and watch a horror movie marathon.

If you’re watching with all the family, we suggest "Casper" or "The Corpse Bride" by Tim Burton, funny and enjoyable movies that are just a tiny bit scary. And for adults only, don’t miss "The Shining", "Friday the 13th" or "Poltergeist". Congratulations if you can get to sleep after watching all that!

Fancy dress

On the other hand, if you are one of those people that prefers going out, you absolutely must get yourself a costume. For one night you can be a zombie, a witch, a vampire or use your imagination to create a costume that will scare the living daylights out of passers-by!

This year you don’t have to leave everything to the last moment. You have been warned! The best way to get things done is to get everything ready together with your friends or family.

Get ready to join the kids having fun trick or treating in the neighbourhood or come to one of our theme parties or go out and have fun meeting witches and demons on the streets.
