Things to do in Capdepera

Mallorca & Menorca Guide

Hiking, beach and historical sites. Bordering the easternmost coast, Capdepera is one of the must-see municipalities on your trip.

Discover the most eastern part of Majorca

The municipality of Capdepera borders the coast at the most easterly tip of Mallorca. Its coastline is very rocky and jagged with numerous coves with its most populated villages situated along the coast such as Cala Rajada, Cala Mesquida, Canyamel -with its majestic tower- and Font de Sa Cala; if you look on the map you will how close they are to each other, all of which offer a range of activities to suit all tastes and a very high standard of service. These combined with the natural beauty of the area make without a doubt Capdepera one of the most beautiful places in Spain.

The town of Capdepera, which is more than 700 years old, is one of the most important historical sites in Mallorca. On the local council website, there is a map and lots of information, in Spanish and other languages, so there is no reason not to stop and see this beautiful corner of Balearic Islands.

It is worthwhile spending a few leisurely hours discovering the gardens of the Capdepera castle, seeing up close its different defence constructions, its towers and the remains of more than 125 houses, which help to imagine how the inhabitants of Capdepera lived in the 14th century.  Every year there is a Medieval party in the Castle of Capdepera and it is easy to find information about this from the various tourist information offices throughout the municipality.

Dunes in Capdepera

Seven kilometres from Capdepera, and right next to the hotel Zafiro Cala Mesquida is a cove of the same name, with an amazing beach of dunes, pine trees with crystalline waters. Cala Mesquida was declared an area of Special Natural  Interest because  of  its valuable ecosystem, as it has one of the largest colonies of seagulls and cormorants of the Balearic Islands.   The hotel Zafiro Cala Mesquida,  which is only 400 metres from the beach  and   set in 8000m ²   of beautiful gardens,  this setting plus its apartments make it  the ideal place to relax with the family or with a group of friends.

From this part of the coast it is quite easy to make an excursion to other nearby beaches, and visit some of the most well-known prehistoric sites of the Balearic Islands, such as the talayotic village of Ses Païses d'Artà, or the amazing caves of Artà and Drach. The caves of Artá are located on the maritime coast of Capdepera, surrounded by mountains that tower over the sea that surrounds us, the one we call the Mediterranean, here the visitors can enjoy the magic of what lies beneath the island.

The best trip ever to Mallorca

Another of the coves of Capdepera is Cala Agulla, which is one of the most well-preserved jewels of the Artá peninsular it has beautiful white sand with rocks and very clean and clear waters with ample space for beach sports and games. Cala Agulla has remained almost unspoiled, surrounded by pine trees and with a truly stunning natural landscape. Even so, you will find umbrellas and hammocks to rent, snack bars, bars, beach bars and life guards for peace of mind.

There are plenty of reasons to go out of the hotel and discover what Capdepera as to offer, which is quite a lot but one of reasons is to discover the numerous waking and riding trails, which are an ideal way to discover the region. If we leave from the hotel Zafiro Cala Mesquida going towards Cala Agulla there is a foot path 10km long through the pine forests and with a landscape full of plant life. And if you go from the hotel Zafiro Park Cala Mesquida towards Cala Lliteras there are other coves or beaches immersed in an almost virgin landscape that one can easily cycle to. What’s also worth doing is to go along the coast track north of Capdepera on mountain bike to discover the fabulous scenery and virgin coves.

Capdepera at your feet

The municipality of Capdepera has several well  marked hiking trails that include wildlife  and monuments, which are all available to view of the council website, in Spanish and other languages. One of the  most interesting itineraries is the so-called ‘Route of the Sea’, which links with Canyamel and its impressive tower. The route runs along the  coastline for most of the way. Passing through all the beaches of Capdepera, including a stretch of the promenade of Cala Rajada, and climbs up to Cap Vermell offering a panoramic view of Canyamel. If a visitor to the area  prefers to do some more intense or demanding sports, then that’s no problem because in Capdepera it is easy to practice diving, sailing, water skiing and even microlight flying.

Information is readily available from any tourist information point in the area. Capdepera is one of the best options to enjoy and make the most of your stay in Mallorca and it is also one the best parts of Spain. Here you will never be bored, your trip will be different, just like the memories you take home   You will be dreaming of a tower, with a beach, with a sea...
