Golfing tales and legends in Mallorca
Two-time Masters champion and one of Spain’s greatest golfing legends, José María Olazábal has long been a familiar face at tournaments in Mallorca. He made history at the Balearic Open in 1988, where he played a memorable final against Seve Ballesteros. Renowned for his elegance on the course and exceptional short game, Olazábal remains an inspiration for new generations of golfers.
In 1990, it was the turn of Seve Ballesteros to make history in Mallorca with one of his most iconic victories at the Balearic Open, held at Son Vida Golf. In a dramatic finish, the legendary Cantabrian golfer secured his win on the 18th hole - a spectacular par-5 dogleg, clinching victory in a tense play-off. His charisma and natural talent made every tournament a show, and his deep connection to the island remains etched in the memories of golf fans.
The list of great golfers who have visited Mallorca to perfect their swing includes icons such as Tiger Woods and Jon Rahm. They are joined by players such as Jeff Winter and Yannik Paul, who have left their mark on Mallorca, whether competing in tournaments or enjoying a round in private on some of its prestigious courses. Even celebrities outside the world of golf, such as Barack Obama, have chosen Mallorca for a quick golfing break.
Michael Douglas, another keen golfer, has often been spotted on the island's courses during his extended stays, while Claudia Schiffer, the German model who lived for decades in Camp de Mar, was a regular at Golf de Andratx, located right alongside the Zafiro Palace Andratx.
Mallorca has also drawn royalty and sports legends. Birgitta of Sweden, widely known for her love of golf, was a regular at local tournaments, while former tennis star Boris Becker has nurtured his passion for golf on the island, taking part in exclusive events alongside influential international figures.
