The 7 best beaches in Palma de Mallorca
Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the Balearic Islands and the main city on Mallorca. Apart from its more urban, cosmopolitan side and its great variety of leisure and culture, Palma also offers a perfect set of incredible coves and beaches where you can enjoy your holiday. Some of these beaches are in fact just steps from the city centre, which makes them ideal if you want to combine a day of shopping, museums, and terraces with a bit of tranquillity by the sea.
Can Pere Antoni
The beach Can Pere Antoni is the Palma city beach par excellence. It's located just steps from the heart of the city and from here you also get a beautiful view of the Cathedral of Mallorca. It's a beach with golden sand, about 750 metres long and always lively. Groups of locals gather here daily to sunbathe, play volleyball, play sports... There are all kinds of services available and plenty of bars and beach clubs nearby. You can get here by bike too, as it's right by the city promenade.
Portixol
The Portixol area is the continuation of Can Pere Antoni beach. This used to be the fishermen’s neighbourhood, with low houses by the sea. It has now become one of the city's trendy areas thanks to this proximity to the sea, and the beautiful coves. Along the entire neighbourhood, and through the next called Molinar, you can enjoy a pleasant bike ride or walk by the sea. You’ll pass plenty of outdoor terraces and restaurants, all of them offering a good atmosphere. As you move along the coastline you can also choose from plenty of small coves with sand and rocks, crystal-clear waters, and a calm sea. These coves don’t provide services such as showers and sunbeds, but all are accessible and lovely.
Ciudad Jardín beach
If you continue your walk to the south, you'll see how the coves in Portixol and Molinar come to an end and instead you arrive at a large sandy beach. This is the Ciudad Jardín beach, a favourite among families living in Palma, but also for surf lovers, as there's a part of it that's ideal for surfing on days when a wind blows across the bay. This beach does have basic services such as showers and lifeguards, and there’s easy parking in the neighbourhood.
Cala Estancia
The beach Cala Estancia is about 11 kilometres from the centre of Palma de Mallorca and you can reach it both by car and by bike, or even walking, as the city promenade extends all the way out there, along the beaches already mentioned. Cala Estancia is a very quiet beach, with almost no waves and it’s sheltered from the wind, so ideal to visit any time of the year. The water here is very calm, the sand is white and fine, and there's sun here throughout the day.
Can Pastilla
The beach in Can Pastilla is the neighbouring beach, just some steps to the south, past the San Antonio de la Playa Yacht Club. This location by the club makes this beach very popular among those who practice sailing, paddle surfing and kite surfing. It’s a large beach with fine sand and perfect orientation if you want to see the sunset, and the atmosphere here is always lively thanks to the numerous bars and restaurants around it.
Playa de Palma
Playa de Palma is the extension of Can Pastilla to the south. This large, sandy beach – one of the largest on Mallorca – joins the famous Arenal de Llucmajor and creates a huge oasis of sun and Mediterranean Sea that continues for more than five kilometres. Just like the other beaches mentioned so far, the promenade runs along it and offers all kinds of services to the visitors: from the usual showers to the famous 'spas', meaning beach clubs where you can have a drink or eat just a few metres from the sand.
Cala Mayor
On the other side of the Bay of Palma you'll find another beach that features among the most popular beaches of Palma de Mallorca. This is the beach Cala Mayor, a 200-metre-long beach with white sand, rocky areas on both sides and easy access for children and the elderly. This is a city beach, but it keeps a certain charm: the atmosphere here is lovely and the water is clean and calm.
