Where to surf on Mallorca
Mallorca's 555 km coastline offers plenty of unique and irresistible opportunities to enjoy the clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea at almost any time of the year. Among all those kilometres, you can find up to 3 large areas with swell that are perfect for surfing on the island.
Of course, before you choose one you have to check times and winds, because even if there are normally good waves in all of them in spring, autumn and winter, it does vary a lot depending on the time of day, general weather and currents.
Surf in the Bay of Alcudia
Very near our hotels in Puerto de Alcudia – Zafiro Tropic and Zafiro Palace Alcudia – and Playa de Muro – Zafiro Bahía – is where the most spectacular stretch for surfing in the north of Mallorca is located. This is right where the bay of Alcudia opens up, where you find some of the best beaches on the island, and some of the most suitable spots for surfing.
- Playa de Alcudia and Playa de Muro
For those who would like to get started in the world of surfing, Alcudia and Playa de Muro have everything you need. Here you can find shops and professional surf schools where you can rent a board and even book a group class, or a completely individualised class.
The waves are not always perfect, but the beaches are ideal for beginners because they don't have any dangerous currents. Also, the sea floor slopes gently providing waves that you can surf, but with a frequency that allows you to rest in between, and surf safely.
- Son Serra de Marina
The benchmark surf beach in the north of Mallorca is Son Serra de Marina, a 7 km-long, practically unspoilt stretch of sand that is easily accessible and where you can enjoy several different surf spots, such as ‘Parada del Bus’, ‘Compuerta’, ‘Dos Playas’, ‘Berberechos’...
One of the most famous spots is called ‘El Bunker’, and this is a meeting place for those who want to enjoy classic surfing: the most transparent sport in the world, in the words of the great Drew Kampion, who in his book Stoked (1997) defined it as follows:
“Surfing is magic – riding echoes of cosmic energy, transmitted through vast tracks of ocean, at the fringes of continents".
Mallorca's East Coast
If you follow the coast to Levante area, before reaching Cala Ratjada, you’ll find one of the most spectacular surfing beaches on the island surrounded by stunning scenery.
- Cala Mesquida
Cala Mesquida is part of the Levante de Mallorca Natural Park, and there are always good waves to catch here. It's an ideal beach for experienced surfers, as the currents can be strong at times.
Remember that if you'd like to stay in this beautiful cove, it's also where our Zafiro Cala Mesquida is located: the best place to relax after an intense day of surfing.
- Canyamel
Canyamel beach is a privileged spot, especially in spring and autumn when the waves are really impressive along this coastline. It’s an easy beach to access and many of the surfing schools organise their courses here during the months leading up to summer.
Surf in the Bay of Palma
The Bay of Palma is the stretch of coast with swell nearest the capital of the Balearic Islands. This means that you'll always find someone watching the wind here in the area, riding the waves. It is, however, best to come here in winter. That's when you'll be able to enjoy better waves.
- Can Pastilla
This spot is ideal for beginners, as the waves are slow. This lets you to get up on the board and surf without too much difficulty. There are also several surf schools and bars nearby, as it's also a famous hangout for people practising kitesurfing, longboarding and paddle surfing.
- Ciudad Jardín
One of the most famous surf spots among the locals, since this is where you'll find one of Mallorca's great waves. Its formation is due to the sea promenade and the breakwater that was built in the area, giving rise to perfect, long waves and making this place a must for any fan of surfing visiting the island.
