How did the Palma Marathon Zafiro 2019 go?
It was mid-October and the weather was still as great as usual in Palma de Mallorca. This year it was a challenging and exciting race for all the runners at the different distances: 42, 21 and 10km. A warm day and a spectacular route which took in the Palma seafront and several streets in the historic city centre made the event a memorable day for all.
The number of women runners once again broke records for races in Spain, with 44% of all the runners being women.
The full marathon was won by the German runners Nikki Johnstone (2h28:50) and Silvia Felt (3h04:41). Both of them were delighted with the event when they were interviewed after finishing. Johnstone explained that “Running through the centre of Palma is spectacular. It’s been an unforgettable day and I’ve enjoyed it more than ever before. I felt really at home" Silvia Felt remarked that “I’m very proud to have won this fantastic marathon. Running through the city centre with the crowd cheering you on and seeing so many people at the finishing line was such a great feeling".
In the half marathon there was an Italian double with the races won by Elisa Melilli (1h27:05) and Salvatore Gambino (1h11:30). The 10km races were won by the Spanish entrants Cristina Polanco (37:04) and Jorge Fresnedillo (32:37).
The Zafiro Team involved once again this year
A first-class event in which the team from Zafiro Hotels, the main sponsors of the event, also took part in the races. Our friendly mascot Yzzy the koala was also there, cheering on the little ones in the Kids’ Run. Our chefs were also on site, preparing delicious snacks in our VIP tent, while our CEO, Antònia Plomer, attended both the start of one of the races and the awards ceremony. Zafiro Hotels loves sport!
The Zafiro entertainment team also received a lot of applause from the crowd for all the effort they put in to cheering on runners all the way along the course.
