The event of the year for cycling fans is fast approaching. The successful Mallorca 312 event will be held on April 27 on the island and this year is expected to attract around 8,000 participants. 312 km, 225 km or 152 km are the 3 distances available for this friendly long-distance race. All of them start with a ride into the formidable Serra de Tramuntana mountains, home to some of the most spectacular stages of the race, including the climb up to Puig Mayor along a 14 km stretch with a 6% gradient, one of the hardest parts of the entire route.
After the mountain tour, the race continues with a route around the island interior taking participants through a large number of towns and villages and some of the most beautiful corners of the island before arriving back at the starting point.
"The event is relaxed, not very competitive and very friendly... It’s a professional event, but it’s also a bit Mediterranean" - this is how some of last year’s participants described it. One of the big surprises this year came with the announcement of the racer who will wear number 312, which is none other than the two-time Tour de France champion, Alberto Contador. Contador has already gone down in history as one of the most successful and beloved cyclists of modern times.
Contador will take on the 312 kilometre distance along with the rest of the participants, adding another attraction to an event which will be the centre of attention on the island on April 27.
