Angelique Kerber: "Mallorca is a perfect place to play tennis"

There are only a few days left before the start of one of the year’s most important women's tennis tournaments, the WTA Mallorca Open, to be held once again this year at the Santa Ponsa Country Club in Calvià. The current Wimbledon champion, number 5 in the world and recently named "athlete of the year", the German Angelique Kerber, will be the main attraction at this year’s WTA Mallorca Open.

Kerber is delighted to have the chance to play in Mallorca again and told us all about how much she likes to visit the island. 

Tell us Angelique, what is it about Mallorca that makes you like coming to play here?

For me, Mallorca is a great place not only for playing tennis, but also just to visit in general. The food, the people, the scenery, the sea... I always love coming back to the island. With 300 days of sunshine every year, players have the opportunity to play in good weather conditions almost all year round. I think it's a perfect place to play tennis!

Do you think it’s a good destination for players of your level?

I would recommend it. From the tennis point of view, it’s fantastic. There are also a lot of tennis fans that live here, partly because both Carlos Moya and Rafa Nadal are from the island. There are also a lot of fans of German tennis on the island, which also makes it more special for me to play here.

In addition to the excellent tennis facilities and weather, Mallorca has great food, excellent hotels, beautiful beaches and lovely people. I feel really happy whenever I'm here, and that's the main reason why I always come back. I think you could say that Mallorca is one of my favourite destinations in the world, and I always leave the island with my batteries recharged and a big smile on my face.
