The night of the Perseids is one of the most highly anticipated events of the summer. And Zafiro Hotels would like to help you make this very special event even more unforgettable.
August is the time for a fascinating phenomenon in our skies: the Perseids or meteor shower. For a few nights the sky is full of shooting stars and people making wishes for their dreams to come true. This phenomenon is also known as the tears of Saint Lawrence as it coincides with the festival that commemorates his martyrdom, and lights up the sky every year between August 11 and 13. The meteor shower is caused by the Comet Swift-Tuttle and is a unique celestial event, with peak activity occurring on August 12, when up to 200 meteors per hour can be seen shooting across the sky.
The best places to enjoy the event are as far as possible from any light pollution, and the higher up the better.

Romantic dinner under the stars
The Zafiro Palace Andratx Hotel is offering a romantic dinner under the stars, comprising a 6-course gourmet tasting menu with excellent wine pairings from well-stocked bodega. With soft lighting, candles, aromatic plants and clear views of the beautiful bay and night sky, you can enjoy the meteor shower along with dishes such as duck micuit with a raspberry sauce, carabinero red prawns with a prawn emulsion, venison tournedos with a forest-berry demi-glace or turbot on kohlrabi with apple puree.
This experience is available to all hotel guests and is free for those staying with the Zafiro Club. The perfect way to end a dream holiday.
Make a wish at Capdepera lighthouse
The best place to see the Perseids is somewhere with no light pollution. Capdepera in the northeast of the island has a natural environment and low levels of light pollution that make is perfect for enjoying this amazing natural event. And the best place to be is at its most picturesque and panoramic attraction: the Capdepera lighthouse. Enjoy this thrilling experience in one of the most spellbinding locations in Mallorca and make a wish under the stars.
This year the event also coincides with the crescent moon, so you can see it with your back to the moon.
A day on Cala Mesquida Beach
Very near Capdepera is another of the best places in Mallorca to see the meteor shower: Cala Mesquida Beach. This beach is renowned for its easy access and wonderful natural environment, surrounded by sand dunes that are part of a Nature Reserve.
We suggest that you to spend a day here on the beach and stay around until night falls and you can see the shooting stars up above. Cala Mesquida Beach can be easily reached from our Zafiro Cala Mesquida Hotel, so you only need to prepare yourself for a magical evening and take some time out for stargazing.
Traditional boat trip
Enjoying shooting stars while floating on the Mediterranean Sea is definitely an unforgettable experience. If you have the chance to organise an excursion in a small boat or a llaüt, a traditional Mallorcan boat, you can get away from the resorts and sail to secluded areas such as the Coll Baix Cove or Alcanada Lighthouse. Once you get there, wait for it to get dark and then be amazed as the magic begins.
These natural, peaceful and unlit settings are perfect for seeing the shooting stars in all their splendour. And they are also only a short distance from Port d'Alcúdia, a port where you can easily book your boat trip.
We hope you like these ideas and that all your wishes come true!
